Composite bonding is a high-impact cosmetic treatment that can improve the overall look and balance of your smile.
What is composite bonding?
Cosmetic bonding is a minimally invasive, fast and convenient dental restoration technique to enhance the appearance of stained, irregular or chipped teeth. The treatment can also be used to reduce gaps between teeth for great results and a beautiful smile in just one sitting.
Composite bonding can be used to :
- Repair chipped or irregular teeth.
- Correct minor alignment irregularities.
- Enhance the appearance of pitted, grooved or blemished tooth surfaces.
- Close small gaps between front teeth.
Composite bonding might be used in conjunction with other treatments and is a particularly popular choice after orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign® and teeth whitening as part of a Smile Makeover.
What is composite bonding made of?
Composite bonding is made of a composite resin material designed to mimic the shade, shape, and light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Patients can decide to colour-match to their natural teeth or enhance their smile by opting for a shade or two brighter. If you are looking for a brighter smile, we would recommend teeth whitening the teeth before applying composite bonding as this produces more successful results.
What is involved in composite bonding?
Composite bonding is a straightforward, minimally invasive treatment with maximum impact. There is no drilling of the teeth involved, and the whole treatment is practically pain-free, with as little discomfort as possible. In the majority of cases, they can be done in a single visit, often without the need for an anaesthetic and with immediately visible results.
Your dentist will start by lightly roughening the surface of the teeth to be treated. The tooth-coloured composite resin is then applied to the tooth. The resin bonds to the surface and hardens in a short time under a special dental light. The composite bonding material is then shaped to give an even form and appearance as well as reduce gaps between teeth.
Finally, your dentist will polish the surface to match the surrounding teeth as closely as possible. Cosmetic bonding is a relatively short procedure with reliable results.
