Inlays and Onlays are used as a more conservative treatment for restoring teeth – that have been damaged due to decay or trauma – when the natural tooth structure can no longer support the traditional filling.
Inlays and Onlays are bespoke composites, porcelain or metal inserts specially made by professional dental technicians that are permanently bonded into the crown or onto the side of damaged teeth.
Inlays
An inlay is a small, custom-made insert that is bonded into the centre of a tooth that requires strengthening, having been damaged by trauma or decay. Inlays are often used to repair the teeth at the back of the mouth. These are the teeth that are used for chewing and tend to be larger than those at the front of the mouth.
Onlays
For damaged or fractured teeth, an onlay is used to treat the “cusp” of the tooth – this refers to the part of the tooth that is visible. An onlay will sit on top of this raised part of the tooth, repairing any damage and helping to support and protect the cusp of the tooth.
What is the procedure for an Inlay or Onlay repair?
Your dentist will first administer a local anaesthetic and begin removing the damaged or decayed parts. Once that has been done, the area to receive the insert is prepared and dental impressions are taken.
The onlay or onlay insert will then be custom-made in a dental lab to exactly fit the space in the prepared tooth. During your next appointment, your dentist will ensure that the insert is positioned correctly and fits perfectly before permanently bonding it into place.
Completing the restoration, the surface of the tooth is then smoothed and polished for comfortable eating and a pleasing aesthetic appearance.
