At the Charlbury Dental Practice, we believe in preventative dentistry and therefore, we see dental hygiene as an essential part of your dental care.
Seeing a dental hygienist on a regular basis is an effective way to keep your teeth feeling good and looking their best, with lasting oral health benefits. That is why our hygienists at the Charlbury Dental Practice are key members of our oral care team.
When it comes it dental care, we strongly believe that “prevention is better than cure”. And in our experience, patients who have previously suffered from tooth decay problems often experience fewer oral health issues when scheduling regular hygienist care.
What happens during a hygienist appointment?
The Hygienist will first examine your mouth and tongue for any signs of oral cancer as well as check your gum health for any signs of gum disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). Then she will first clean around and under the gum line to remove plaque and tartar (also known as a scale and polish). Removing a build-up of dental plaque and bacteria that accumulate in hard-to-reach areas is essential to reduce the occurrence of gum (periodontal) disease and associated problems.
Our hygienists also use our Swiss-made Airflow® One Tooth Polishing, the latest in deep cleaning technology (and gold standard) for your teeth. An Airflow® One polishing treatment can help remove persistent stains, light tartar and plaque, leaving your teeth cleaner, brighter and healthier, in a less abrasive and more comfortable fashion. Therefore we are recommending this for all our patients now.
Our hygienists are also able to apply fissure sealants (special plastic coatings) place fillings and apply topical fluoride gels where required to help prevent decay in other areas.
Also importantly, our dental hygienist team have the professional knowledge and skills to help you maintain a healthy mouth and fresh breath in between appointments. They can show you how to clean any areas of the mouth that are harder to reach and recommend any special oral hygiene techniques, tools or routines.
